Kennedy Space Center
Published On: Oct 26, 2006

When you look up at the sky at night, do you wonder what else is up there? Do you wish that you could take a trip to space to explore? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then the Kennedy Space Center is one destination that you absolutely must visit.

If you make it a point to watch launches when they air, you know that Kennedy is the launch site. If the launch thrills you from your living room, imagine how it would feel to be there when it happened. One of the greatest advantages to visiting the Space Center is the ability to witness a launch. Tickets can be purchased in advance, and the planned schedule is available online months in advance.

Rocket and shuttle launches are not the only things to do when you visit though. Even when a launch is not scheduled, you will be able to tour the area where they take place. You'll also be able to tour a landing strip, as well as the launch status center where you'll be able to sit in on a live briefing on launches or on what's happening with NASA missions in space. The Astronaut Walk

Many of these missions involve the International Space Station. Another area on the tour is the facility where parts and tools needed for the Space Station are constructed, inspected and processed. But even more interesting is the chance to explore a full-scale replica of the Habitation Module - the area where astronauts on the station work, sleep and live.

And if the that experience thrills you, you'll want to be sure to check out the full-sized recreation of the space shuttle Explorer. Inside, you'll get a taste of how the astronauts live and work while in space. Outside, you'll see an external fuel tank as well as the rocket boosters - also reproduced to actual size - that are used to blast the shuttle into space.

Of course, anyone truly fascinated with space exploration will also want to see the crafts that preceded the shuttles. The best way to do this is to tour the Rocket Garden. There you can see ships from all eras of space exploration including Atlas and Titan and an Apollo Capsule.

But if the experience of space craft isn't enough for you, check out the Astronaut Hall of Fame. As a tribute to the astronauts, you'll be able to see collections of personal effects and other historic elements of the space program like astronaut training modules.

In addition to space and astronaut artifacts, you'll have the chance to experience some of the thrill being a part of the space program. Gear up in an astronaut's flight suit, feel the power of a G-force - feel what four times the pull of gravity does to your body - and also take a walk on the moon.

Of course, once the impulse to explore space has set in, you'll want to make the time to watch one - or both - of the films in the Kennedy Space Center's IMAX theaters. Much of the footage of these films was created by astronauts on space missions, and the 5-story screen and 3-dimensional effects will make you feel like you were there with them.
