Cirque du Soleil - La Nouba
Downtown Disney District
Walt Disney World Resort
Orlando, Florida 32830
Cirque du Soleil has never been just another circus, and no show proves that quite as well as La Nouba. The name comes from a French phrase that suggests living life to its fullest.
Life comes at you with the unexpected. The same things that scare us are also things that exhilarate us. Everything uncertain is also familiar. Anything is possible. All of these are factors that draw the viewer into the show.
But it's not just the true to life themes that draw the audience in. The careful blending of dream and nightmare, the fantastic and the day-to-day sparks the imagination. It's your own curiosity that draws you into the world of the show.
It's especially easy for members of the audience to follow the story - which was intentionally left open-ended to allow the imagination of the audience members draw each person in - of La Nouba because of the structure of the theater itself.
Crafted by a team of designers from both Disney and Cirque du Soleil, the theater constructed for La Nouba seats over 1600 people and was designed so that all areas of the 75 foot high stage could be easily viewed from each and every seat.
The seats are tiered, stadium-style, and form a semi-circle around the stage. This allows for everyone in the audience to have an unobstructed view of all of the action that takes place.
You'll be amazed by the synchronized performance on the flying trapeze. Four swings on two different levels, 53 feet above the stage, and performers who seem near collision in the air catch the attention of the entire audience with their athleticism.
Equally important are elements of rhythm and agility, which are also key elements of the Aerial Ballet portion of the performance. Suspended in red silk, the performers interpret the scene in a unique form of dance.
There are additional acts that are similar to those of a traditional circus. Performers balance on a half-inch wide high wire - stretched 90 feet across the stage - 34 feet in the air. Another balances on chairs stacked eight high.
Balance is only one element of the performer's skills. Others bring to the stage the skill of a well-practiced gymnast. In addition to tumbling acts, much of the gymnastic element takes place within the constant action on the trampoline.
And, of course, the BMX-style bicycle act, with its twisting and turning and acrobatic stunts on wheels combine gymnastic ability and balance, and is simply amazing.
Even more impressive however is the way that all of the parts of the show blend together. Be it the perspective of the audience, the acrobatics, the way the story unfolds and can be interpreted in as many ways as there are members of the audience and the musical accompaniment, everyone leaves La Nouba with a favorite part.
