What would happen if you tried to put a ski resort in Central Florida? This is the question that the imagineers behind Disney's Blizzard Beach must have asked themselves when they started work on Orlando's coolest water park.
This family-friendly park begins with the ski theme, and maintains it throughout all of the rides. Whether it's a slalom course of a toboggan run that provides a winter rush that gives you chills, you're sure to find it at Blizzard Beach.
You'll hop on the ski lift to get to the taller slides at Blizzard Beach. Once you get up to the top of Mount Gushmore, there's nowhere to go but down, and you'll be able to choose which way you want to get there.
These big thrills come from four primary slides:
- Summit Plummet: This sky-scraping ski jump is the world's tallest and fastest water slide. Beginning 120 feet above the earth, riders travel 360 feet at speeds of 60 miles per hour.
- Slush Gusher: In the shadow of Summit Plummet is this 90 foot tall slide that has two bumps to add some ups to the down.
- Downhill Double Dipper: This 230 foot inner tube ride lets you and a friend race at 25 miles per hour to the bottom with two side-by-side slides.
- Toboggan Racer: Great for taking on the whole family, the Toboggan Racer has riders grab a mat and race down the slope, all eight side-by-side lanes of it.
Of course, not all of the rides require a daredevil spirit. If you're looking for a great slide that's a little more mellow, Blizzard Beach has four rides for you as well.
- Runoff Rapids: What seems to be an inner tube ride is actually three inner tube rides. Each of the flumes is different (one is even completely enclosed), so make sure that you try them all.
- Snow Stormers: Again a slide with three different courses to check out as you and your friends race, slalom style, from top to bottom.
- Teamboat Springs: With this ride, Disney's Blizzard Beach can claim one of the world's longest family raft ride. Three to six passengers climb in to each raft and spin their way through 1200 feet of white water and waterfalls.
- Ski Patrol Training Camp: This play area for the pre-teen kids features inner tube slides, curving slides and a challenge to walk across 'floating iceburgs.'
For the younger kids, head over to Tike's Peak. This smaller water play area has gentle water slides, inner tube slides, a wading pool and fountains to keep the youngest members of your family happy.
And, if you want to spend some time in the pool with your family, Blizzard Beach provides that too. Meltaway Bay is a one acre pool where you can wade or swim, or just cool off and relax during the day.
All in all, Blizzard Beach not only offers something for everyone, but also is a great place to cool down from the Florida heat.
